10-Yard Guide

Everything you need to know about a 10-yard dumpster.

What is a 10-yard roll-off dumpster?

A 10-yard roll-off dumpster is the smallest container we deliver. It measures roughly 12 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 3.5 feet tall, with an open top and a swing-out door on the back end so you can walk debris in instead of throwing it over the side. The "10 yard" name comes from cubic-yard volume: ten cubic yards of debris fits inside, which works out to about three full-size pickup truck loads.

Roll-offs got the name because the dumpster rolls off the back of the delivery truck onto your driveway, then rolls back on when it's time to haul. There's no hopper, no compaction, no fixed dumpster on wheels — it's a steel container that gets set, filled, and pulled. Simple and predictable.

Common 10-yard projects in the DMV

The 10-yard is the right call when you've got a contained, one-room or single-zone cleanout. After more than 25 years of drops across Prince George's and Montgomery County, here's where we see it shine:

  • Garage and basement cleanouts. Stored boxes, broken tools, holiday decor, empty paint cans, leftover lumber. A 10-yard handles a two-car garage's worth of accumulated stuff.
  • Single-bathroom remodels. Tear out a cast-iron tub, vanity, tile, drywall, and a toilet and you'll fit inside a 10-yard with room left over. Most full-bath demos clock in around 5–7 cubic yards.
  • Yard waste and tree removal. Branches, brush, sod, mulch, leaves, a small uprooted tree. Yard waste is bulky but light, so volume hits before weight.
  • Estate downsizing or moving cleanouts. One bedroom or a small apartment's worth of furniture, mattresses, clothes, and household goods.
  • Small flooring or kitchen-tile rip-ups. If you're only pulling tile or hardwood from one room, a 10 is usually enough — unless the tile is thick or set on concrete board.

How much weight can a 10-yard hold?

Every 10-yard rental from JP Roll-Off includes a 1-ton (2,000 lb) weight allowance. For perspective: a fully-loaded car-axle scale ticket on a typical garage cleanout runs 700–1,200 pounds. Most residential jobs stay comfortably inside the tonnage limit. If you go over, excess weight is billed at $105 per additional ton over the allowance.

What fills the weight before the volume? Concrete, dirt, brick, roofing shingles, and plaster lath. Note that heavy aggregates like dirt, concrete, and asphalt only come in 10-, 15-, or 20-yard containers. If your job is mostly heavy materials, ask about our 15-yard heavy-debris quote instead — you'll often pay less by going bigger on weight allowance.

Where will the 10-yard fit on my property?

This is the size people pick when driveway space is tight. A 10-yard fits in a single car spot — about the footprint of a midsize sedan — so you can keep the second half of the driveway clear for daily life. Standard placement options:

  • Driveway, parallel to the house. Most common. We place 2×10 protective boards under the rails so there's no scarring on asphalt or concrete.
  • Driveway, perpendicular to the curb. Useful when you want to pull the door-end toward the work area for walk-in loading.
  • Side yard or alleyway. If we can swing the truck in cleanly. Send a quick photo when you book and we'll spec it.
  • On the street (with permit). If your house has no driveway access, your jurisdiction can issue a temporary right-of-way permit. We'll walk you through it.
Allowed Materials

What can — and can't — go in your 10-yard.

Most residential and light-construction debris is welcome. A few categories are restricted because of how transfer stations weigh and process material, and a small list is hazardous and never goes in any roll-off.

Household items

Furniture, mattresses, boxes, books, toys, kitchenware, appliances (no freon). The everyday cleanout list.

Light construction

Drywall, lumber, doors, cabinets, single-room flooring, tile. Anything from a small interior tear-out.

Yard & landscape

Branches, brush, sod, mulch, soil amendments, small uprooted shrubs and tree limbs.

Heavy debris (priced separately)

Concrete, dirt, brick, asphalt shingles. Allowed but quoted on a different line because they fill weight before volume.

Never allowed

No wet paint, oils, gasoline, batteries, tires, asbestos, propane tanks, freon-containing appliances, or medical waste.

How It Works

From quote to pickup, in four steps.

The whole 10-yard rental — quote to haul-away — fits in four steps and one phone call. No portal, no app, no 12-page form.

1. Get your quote

Use the form above or call (301) 879-7040. Share your address, project, and rough delivery window. We confirm your price in writing the same hour during business hours — priced to your material, call or request a free quote.

2. Next-day drop

If you're in our core area, your 10-yard typically arrives the next day (same-day may be available depending on location and schedule). The driver texts a 30-minute ETA and places it on protective boards.

3. Fill on your schedule

Take your time — every 10-yard rental includes a 14-day window. Need more days? Extra days are just $5/day. Don't overload past the fill line and you're good.

4. One text and we haul

When you're done, call or text to schedule pickup. We'll set a pickup time that works for you. Your quote covers delivery, pickup, the 14-day rental, and a 1-ton allowance; excess weight is billed at $105 per ton over the allowance.

10-Yard FAQ

Quick answers about the 10-yard.

How much does a 10-yard dumpster cost in the DMV?
Our 10-yard rental is priced to your material — call or request a free quote for your project; materials are quoted separately. The price includes delivery, pickup, a 14-day rental, and a 1-ton weight allowance. Extra days are $5/day, and excess weight is billed at $105 per additional ton over the allowance.
Will a 10-yard fit in my driveway?
If a midsize sedan fits, a 10-yard fits. The footprint is roughly 12 ft × 8 ft, the same as a single car spot. We protect every drop with 2×10 boards under the rails so there's no scarring on asphalt or concrete.
How many pickup truck loads equals a 10-yard?
Roughly three full-size pickup truck loads. That makes the 10-yard the right size for a single-room remodel, a garage cleanout, a small yard-waste job, or a one-bedroom estate downsize.
Can I put concrete or shingles in a 10-yard?
Yes, but heavy debris is priced separately because it fills the weight allowance before it fills the volume. If your project is mostly concrete, brick, dirt, or asphalt shingles, mention it when you book and we'll quote it on a heavy-debris line — you'll often save money sizing up to a 15-yard.
How quickly can you deliver a 10-yard?
Next-day delivery in our core area (Beltsville, Greenbelt, College Park, Laurel, Hyattsville, Bowie, Riverdale Park, and surrounding ZIPs) — same-day may be available depending on location and schedule. Outside that area we typically deliver next business day.
